Tubulo-squamous Vaginal Polyp With Basaloid Epithelial Differentiation

Abstract: Tubulo-squamous polyp is a recently described and apparently benign lesion that most frequently involves the upper vagina of postmenopausal patients. Histologically, it is characterized by the presence of cysts, squamous epithelial nests, and small tubular structures that are surrounded by a hypocellular fibrous stroma. Some lesions show focal immunoreactivity for prostatic acid phosphatise and/or prostate-specific antigen raising the possibility of derivation from Skene's glands. In this report, an additional… Show more

“…In 1 of these cases, there were also basaloid cells with palisading at the periphery of the nodules, identical in appearance to those earlier reported in a vaginal tubulosquamous polyp by one of us (CJS). 11 One case also showed focal intracytoplasmic granular cell change (Fig. 4A).…”

“…The glands are usually positive for PAP and/or PSA. Vaginal polyps with the glands were reported as TSPs (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). McCluggage and Young (3), who initially described 10 cases of TSPs, speculated a possible origin from ectopic prostate or Skene glands.…”

“…In the vagina, these lesions have generally taken the form of a polyp, termed tubulosquamous polyp (TSP), which may be derived from Skene glands (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). In the cervix, this has been termed ectopic prostatic tissue (7)(8)(9)(10)(11).…”

“…Although our case was negative with PSA and PSAP, some of the tubulo-squamous polyps reported in the literature, showed immunoreactivity with PSA and/or PSAP (1,2). Thus, it is suggested that these lesions are originated from paraurethral Skene glands (the female equivalent of prostatic glands in the male) or ectopic prostate tissue (2,6). However, none of these theories has been proved to date.…”
