Tumeurs malignes de la cavité buccale et du pharynx : étude sur 11 ans au Centre Hospitalier de Soavinandriana, Antananarivo

Abstract

The oral cavity and pharynx are the location of several diseases but cancer is the most redoutable. The objective of this work is to study the characteristics of malignant tumors of the oral cavity and pharynx. A retrospective study has been conducted during eleven years (January 2001-December 2011)at the “Hospital Center of Soavinandriana-Antananarivo”, from January 2001 to December 2011. We identified 28 cases with 12 men (42.9%) and 16 women (57.1%). Alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking were almost mentioned in males. The age group between 51 and 60 years was most involved (28.6%). The oral cavity was the main location (71.43%) compared to the pharynx (28.57%). Within the oral cavity, the tongue was the most affected site (17.8%) and oropharynx was the main location in the pharynx (14.3%). Carcinomas were the main histological type (82.1%). This pathology had poor prognosis. Delayed treatment significantly reduced patient survival. The management is multidisciplinary. In this study, the mortality rate was 10.7%, however this result is underestimated because of the existence of patients lost to follow up. According to this study, the typical case in our sample was a fifty years old woman, with carcinoma of the oral cavity and having had chronic consumption of alcohol and tobacco.
