Tumor in the veins: an abdominal perspective with an emphasis on CT and MR imaging

Abstract: Endovenous tumor thrombus in abdomen should be accurately diagnosed as it is a significant finding that may change medical and surgical treatment approaches. As some underlying reasons for endovenous tumor thrombi are relatively rare and imaging findings may be quite subtle, they can be easily overlooked which may have important clinical consequences. In this paper, we described the various imaging aspects of endovenous tumor thrombi originating from various tumor types in different venous structures of the ab… Show more

“…8 The length of the primary ureteral tumour infiltrating the ureteral segment is usually greater than the diameter of the tumour infiltrating laterally, while secondary tumours commonly involve a shorter ureteral segment. 5 In contrast, most ureteral metastases show only limited thickening of the ureteral wall on CT, 8 which is consistent with the present case.…”

“…Metastasis of a non-urinary system primary tumour to the ureter is a relatively rare clinical phenomenon and often lacks specific characteristic changes. 5 Early diagnosis of the source of the primary tumour is important to achieve a satisfactory outcome due to wide variations in the treatment of urinary and non-urinary system tumours. However, imaging features of urological metastases may be very similar to those of primary urological tumours.…”

“…Histologically, transitional cell carcinoma is the most common type (55%), followed by SCC (21.5%) and adenocarcinoma (16.4%). In addition, urethral metastatic tumors are rare [6]. There are only few reports of urethral metastatic tumors of urological and colorectal carcinomas.…”

“…The decision to reconstruct depends on patient symptoms, acuity of obstruction, extent of venous collateralization, and level of IVC involvement. 1-3 Other considerations include the availability of suitable conduit, patient hemodynamics, and contamination of the operative field.…”
