Tunable continuous-wave terahertz generation/detection with compact 155 μm detuned dual-mode laser diode and InGaAs based photomixer

Abstract: We demonstrate a tunable continuous-wave (CW) terahertz (THz) homodyne system with a novel detuned dual-mode laser diode (DML) and low-temperature-grown (LTG) InGaAs photomixers. The optical beat source with the detuned DML showed a beat frequency tuning range of 0.26 to over 1.07 THz. Log-spiral antenna integrated LTG InGaAs photomixers are used as THz wave generators and detectors. The CW THz radiation frequency was continuously tuned to over 1 THz. Our results clearly show the feasibility of a compact and f… Show more

“…Therefore, different groups have been working on compact two-color diode laser systems using monolithic approaches with Y-shaped waveguides or separate DFB sections, as well as external cavity schemes [287][288][289][290][291][292]. The first biomedical application of such diode laser based CW systems has been imaging of a human liver with metastasis [7].…”

“…In addition, cw THz systems are highly attractive even for low-resolution spectroscopy and sensing, to avoid the large footprint and costs of mode-locked photo-switching systems. Systems based on thermally tuned distributedfeedback (DFB) lasers [7,8,9] are therefore very attractive for low-cost and mobile THz spectroscopy, sensing and imaging. Outside a research laboratory, temperature robustness is often an issue.…”

“…Because of the same grating, the tuning range of the beat source was limited within from 0.1 THz to 0.57 THz. In 2011, the detuned DML operating at 1.55 μm was proposed to enlarge the tuning range [6]. The operating wavelengths of each DFB LD are detuned by 5 nm to increase the beat frequency tuning range.…”
