Tuning ligand electronics and peripheral substitution on cobalt salen complexes: structure and polymerisation activity

Abstract: A series of cobalt salen complexes, where salen represents an N2O2 bis-Schiff-base bis-phenolate framework, are prepared, characterised and investigated for reversible-termination organometallic mediated radical polymerisation (RT-OMRP). The salen ligands contain a cyclohexane diimine bridge and systematically altered para-substituted phenoxide moieties as a method to examine the electronic impact of the ligand on complex structure and reactivity. The complexes are characterised by single crystal X-ray diffrac… Show more

“…CoL 1 displays an EPR spectrum which is consistent with a low spin Co(II) (S = ½) ground state. Based on reports by our group 48 2+ (red spheres) at 10 000 Oe between 1.8 and 300 K.…”

“…The typical absorption modes of the NH 2 , NO 2 and Br functional groups can be found, further confirming the effective functionalization of the linkers on each MOF, which is also consistent with previous reports. 48,49 The curves in the Zr 3d region could be deconvoluted into two peaks for Zr 3d 5/2 and Zr 3d 3/2 , respectively. “…In contrast Peng et al conducted the polymerization of VAc and MA under DT conditions using a radical initiator/Co molar ratio of 6.5/1 at 60°C [77], suggesting a highly stable carbon-Co(Salen*) bond under these conditions. As suggested by Wayland et al, the square planar geometry of cobalt complexes such as Co(Salen*) [80] is well-suited for controlling the radical polymerization via a DT pathway [22,49]. McNeil et al reported the high efficiency of a square planar bis(b-ketoaminato)cobalt complex ( Fig.…”

“…To ensure a RT mechanism, the authors used a Co complex/radical initiator molar ratio of 1/0.6. However, low VAc conversions were obtained at 65°C [80]. In contrast Peng et al conducted the polymerization of VAc and MA under DT conditions using a radical initiator/Co molar ratio of 6.5/1 at 60°C [77], suggesting a highly stable carbon-Co(Salen*) bond under these conditions.…”
