Turbostratic Stacking Effect in Multilayer Graphene on the Electrical Transport Properties

Abstract: Anomalous carrier transport properties in turbostratic multilayer graphene have been studied by Ryota Negishi et al. in article number http://doi.wiley.com/10.1002/pssb.201900437. The conductance and carrier mobility in the synthesized turbostratic multilayer graphene are higher than those of the monolayer graphene used as growth template. The enhancement is caused by a screening effect in multistacking and by a turbostratic stacking effect where the band structure of the multilayer graphene is similar to that… Show more

“…However, the observed resistance value deviates from the calculated curve and show a lower resistance as indicated by arrows. The same behavior of the significant improvement in conductance with increasing the number of layers has been also observed in the turbostratic multilayer graphene 43 , 44 . The improvement is explained by reducing the carrier scattering due to the screening effect of the multi-stacking for the charges of the impurity on the SiO 2 /Si substrate (the detailed mechanism of the improvement in conductance will be described in the “ Discussion ” section).…”

“…A notable difference between the multilayer graphene and multilayer GNR is the reduction rate of the sheet resistance as the number of layer increases. In the multilayer graphene, the sheet resistance of 7-layer graphene is ~ 0.7 times higher than that of single layer graphene 44 . In contrast, the sheet resistance of 6 or 8-layer GNR is ~ 0.3 times higher than that of single layer GNR (see Fig.…”

“…Graphene (Gr) is a material with excellent electrical, thermal, and optical properties and broad prospects for applications. Monolayer Gr has a unique band structure with a linear electronic dispersion, which results in high carrier mobility , and uniform light absorption of a wide range of wavelengths. , Moreover, multilayer Gr shows high electrical and thermal conductance and light absorption with an increase of layer number. The screening effect of multilayer Gr also prevents the degradation of the electronic transportation properties caused by the surrounding environment, including charge impurities and substrate roughness . However, the energetically favorable AB stacking in multilayer Gr leads to a strong interlayer interaction, which results in a parabolic electronic dispersion .…”
