Turbulent Subcooled Boiling Flow—Experiments and Simulations

Abstract: Experiments and simulations were carried out in this investigation of turbulent subcooled boiling flow of Refrigerant-113 through a vertical annular channel whose inner wall only was heated. The measurements used, simultaneously, a two-component laser Doppler velocimeter for the liquid velocity field and a fast-response cold-wire for the temperature field, and a dual-sensor fiberoptic probe for the vapor fraction and vapor axial velocity. In the numerical simulation, the two-fluid model equations were solved b… Show more

“…Lance and Bataille (1991) studied vertical air-water bubbly flow and found that bubbles were the dominant source of TKE at high void fractions. A similar dependence on void fraction has been observed by other researchers (Hibiki and Ishii 1999;Roy et al 2002).…”

“…The measurement section of the ASU experimental facility [3] consists of a vertical annular channel with the heated inner tube with outer diameter of 15.8 mm and insulated outer tube with inner diameter of 38.02 mm. The total length of the annulus is 3.66 m and the 2.75 m long upper part of the inner tube is heated by the direct current.…”

“…The local measurements of transversal profiles of void fraction, phase velocities, velocity fluctuations, and liquid temperature were performed at a single axial location located 1.99 m downstream from the beginning of the heated section. The measurement probes and measurement techniques used in ASU experiments are described in the original paper of Roy et al [3].…”

“…Using the experimental information from the previous studies, different two-phase flow models were developed and used to calculate convective subcooled boiling flow (Roy et al, 2002;Yeoh et al, 2002;Končar et al, 2004;Ramstorfer et al, 2008) with some success. These models share the characteristics of being based on time-average analysis of information from point measurements probes.…”
