Abstract

Tourism is a subjective experience, triggered by the individual desire to better understand some place else through its people´s culture and its natural environment. The act of traveling allows individuals to come out of themselves and meet others, hang out with similar or different people, tolerate diversity aiming at knowledge, exercise the respect and spirit of experiencing the changing and human face of travel. As an economic activity, which is popularly called tourism industry, it can be defined as the whole set of economic activities that allow people to travel and stay out of their usual place. According to projections of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) (WORLD, 2019), the economic impact of international tourism is nearly US$1.7 trillion, about 7.0% of the worldwide production of goods and services, which puts the tourism activity ahead of important sectors like petroleum. The contribution of tourism to the Brazilian economy is estimated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) at about 3.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (2011 data). Such GDP
