Turkish street addressing system and geocoding challenges

Abstract: A street address system is one of the most basic techniques used by government and others for service delivery. It enables emergency services, security, taxation, health services, delivery and mail services and it also monitors the spatial whereabouts of individuals within a population. The effective management of urban areas can only be achieved if an accurate street address infrastructure is formed. The present study investigated the problems related to street addressing in Turkey and was conducted in three … Show more

“…Another part of the current geocoding literature deals with geocoding application and issues solving in an explicit geographic area such as in Croatia [11], Turkish [12], Brazil [13], China [6][7][8], Australia [14], South Africa [15], Morocco [16], Cuba [17] and India [18]. Most of these countries are developing ones and have to deal with rapid urban growth which introduces problems such as ambiguous region boundaries and lack of convention in spellings of toponyms.…”

“…While the latest geocoding literature deals with the latest techniques in the matter, such as machine learning [3] and deep learning particularly [4], the classical issues related to historical address structure and standardization remain relevant [5,6]. The general literature deals with geographic related applications in different countries such as in Australia [7], Brazil [8], China [9], Croatia [10], Cuba [11], Germany [12], India [13], Morocco [14], Quebec [15], South Africa [16], Turkey [17], etc. The applications based on address locators are more than ever evolving, and the need for reliable and accurate address systems has never been more.…”

“…The official institutions have tried to reorganize the unusual address expressions in a standard form for many years. However, abundant address components, improper and incorrect implementation of numerating studies, the failure of institutions to use the same address format even in their documents, and institutions' unawareness of new address components bring about confusion related to the addresses in Turkey (Yildirim et al, 2014;Kilic and Gulgen, 2019). Since the irregular expressions obscure understanding the components of an address specified by a user, the geocoding services have trouble matching the input address with the standard reference dataset.…”
