Turnover-based storage in non-traditional unit-load warehouse designs

Abstract: This article investigates the effect of assigning the most-active items to the best locations in unit-load warehouses with non-traditional aisles. Specifically, the performance of flying-V and fishbone designs are investigated when products exhibit different velocity profiles. Both single-and dual-command operations are considered for a warehouse where receiving and shipping are located at the midpoint of one side of the warehouse. For dual-command operations, a fishbone design shows similar reductions in trav… Show more

“…Assignment strategies for UL warehouses face the ULAP seeking the minimum average travelled time and distance for the S/R activities. The aim is to minimise the total material handling cost defining the optimal storage location for each product type (Ang, 2012;Carlo & Giraldo, 2012;Gagliardi, Renaud, & Ruiz, 2012;Gu, Goetschalckx, & McGinnis, 2007;Ho & Sarma, 2008;Lee & Schaefer, 1996;Pohl, Meller, & Gue, 2011;Pohl et al, 2009;Rao & Adil, 2014;Van Den Berg, Sharp, Gademann, & Pochet, 1998).…”

“…Finally, the C-products are located in the region farthest away from the P&D point. A-products region and Bproducts region have "triangular" shapes, because we are using a rectilinear distance [15].…”

“…In this paper we use an ABC product classification and a distance-based slotting strategy [15], locating the products with highest turnovers nearest to the P&D point ( Figure 1). This section is devoted to find the best location for the P&D point and the optimal geometry for such a warehouse in order to minimize the Expected Value of the travel distance.…”
