TWIN-10: protocol for a 10-year longitudinal twin study of the neuroscience of mental well-being and resilience

Abstract: IntroductionMental well-being is a core component of mental health, and resilience is a key process of positive adaptive recovery following adversity. However, we lack an understanding of the neural mechanisms that contribute to individual variation in the trajectories of well-being and resilience relative to risk. Genetic and/or environmental factors may also modulate these mechanisms. The aim of the TWIN-10 Study is to characterise the trajectories of well-being and resilience over 12 years across four timep… Show more

“…However, studies about gene and preterm birth's combined or interactive effect on the gut microbiota are scarce. Twins have high genetic and environmental resemblance as monozygotic twins share 100% of their genes compared to dizygotic twins with 50% shared genes, and they are characterized by the common environment of parents and family, like parenting style, education, and so on (15). These similarities make twins an excellent model for disentangling the effect of genetic and environmental factors on shaping gut microbiota.…”

“…1 3 For instance, the concept of well-being has been reported as not only indicating a state of feelings of happiness and content but also including the idea of resilience, that is, the ability of recovering from setbacks. 4 Adding onto this, well-being has also often been described in terms of burn-out in the literature. 5 The problem with this lies in the fact that burn-out is a pathological state, whereas well-being is a concept that holds a positive connotation 6 ; measuring…”
