Twin Registries Worldwide: An Important Resource for Scientific Research

Abstract: Twins can provide unique opportunities to study causal influences on variation in human behaviors, development, and diseases. During the past 10 years, the number of twin registries has increased rapidly across the globe and we thought it timely to bring these to the attention of our readership. In this special issue, we invited papers on twin registries and cohorts from 28 countries representing five continents. Subjects covered include how to establish and maintain twin registries, accurately assess zygosity… Show more

“…As most twin studies so far have been conducted in Western or Asian developed countries (Hur & Craig, 2013), genetic and environmental etiologies of PB and family environment among African children living in very deprived environments remain largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated heritability of PB and FC among Nigerian adolescent twins attending public schools in Lagos State, Nigeria.…”

“…Twin registers have been established to create a more long-term and stable framework for research (Hur & Craig, 2013), aimed at elucidating genetic and environmental influences on health and development. In recognition of the need for collaboration, there has been increased networking of twin study groups, as illustrated by the International Network of Twin Registries (Buchwald et al, 2014).…”

“…Although there are over 60 twin registries worldwide [111], few except for the larger European collections are focused on cancer and have DNA saved either from blood or tissue. Furthermore, substantial numbers are needed for a powerful discovery set and therefore pooling of resources is required.…”
