“…A proper test of this hypothesis requires separate tests of association of these variables within each of the comparison groups, with the results showing a clear relationship in the allergic group and the absence of a relationship in the nonallergic group. Instead, Jacobs et al 6 merged both of their allergic and nonallergic samples before calculating the relationship between their somatic and psychological variables. As a result of merging their 2 groups, the subsequent test of association reported by Jacobs et al reflects primarily the differential incidence of somatic and psychologic predisposition characterizing these 2 groups rather than reflecting the relationship of these variables within each of the different samples.…”
