Two‐dimensional chromatography of complex polymers. IV. Analysis of the grafting reaction of methyl methacrylate onto polybutadiene

Abstract: The grafting reaction of methyl methacrylate onto polybutadiene (PB) was investigated with different chromatographic techniques, including high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and online coupled two‐dimensional liquid chromatography. As a result of the grafting reaction, a complex mixture of nongrafted PB, the graft copolymer PB‐g‐PMMA [where PMMA is poly(methyl methacrylate)], and the PMMA homopolymer was formed. The complete separation of all the products of the grafting reaction was achieved with g… Show more

“…The setup used is that shown in Figure 14.15. 16 Length of the SEC runs was dictated by the slow, 11-µL/min flow rate, necessary because of the geometry and flow incompatibilities between the SEC and RPLC columns.…”

“…This means that short columns (50 mm or less) should be used for fast SEC separations. 2-D SEC6NP separations were applied to the separation and characterization of functional polystyrene [30] and poly(methyl methacrylate) polymers [108], styrene-methacrylate (co)polymers [30,109], styrene-butadiene star polymers [110], butyl acrylate grafted onto poly(styrene-butadiene) [107], methyl methacrylate grafted onto polybutadiene [111], or onto ethane-propene-diene rubber [112] (co)polymers, epoxy resins [113], or styrene-methyl methacrylate-grafted natural rubber [114].…”
