Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides assisted biofunctionalized optical fiber SPR biosensor for efficient and rapid detection of bovine serum albumin

Abstract: The present study reports an alternative method of functionalizing the optical fiber Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensing probe with antibodies for label-free detection of bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein. In this novel approach, the gold coated fiber was first modified with Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets followed by its bio-functionalization with Anti-BSA antibodies. The developed technique not only allowed the amplification of the SPR signals by synergic effects of MoS … Show more

“…In contrast, the limit of detection value on the MoS 2 -based SPR chip has a smaller value (0.29 μg/mL) when compared to conventional chips (0.45 μg/mL). These results confirm that the presence of MoS 2 on the SPR chip is proven to increase sensor sensitivity (Kaushik et al, 2019a ).…”

“…As a monolayer of MoS 2 possesses a higher optical absorption efficiency (~5%) than that of graphene (2.3%) (Lopez-Sanchez et al, 2013 ), it can promote plasmon excitation through an efficient charge transfer between MoS2 and the thin metallic film (Kim et al, 2019 ). In addition, the large surface area and the presence of free sulfur atoms are typical features of MoS 2 , which make it a potential material for developing biosensing interfaces (Kaushik et al, 2019a ). When MoS 2 layers are deposited on metal thin films, the strong coupling can be induced at the metal/MoS 2 interface because of the effective charge transfer and large electric field enhancement, which will result in increased SPR sensitivity (Hu et al, 2019 ).…”

“…The combination of 2D sensing materials, such as graphene or TMDs, with different types of optical fibers for high‐performance vapor/gas sensor has been successfully demonstrated . In comparison, there have been few reports on BP‐based vapor/gas fiber sensors, though this strategy can provide excellent sensing performance by combining the beneficial characteristics from both BP and fiber optics .…”
