Two‐dimensional visualization and measurement of the fetal optic chiasm: improving counseling for antenatal diagnosis of agenesis of the septum pellucidum

Abstract: Our study demonstrates that it is possible to visualize and measure the OC directly on a 2D ultrasound coronal plane. In fetuses with agenesis of the SP, the morphology and width of the OC visual pathway could prove a relevant tool for assessing its development. It would also help in the difficult task of providing antenatal counseling when faced with the diagnosis of agenesis of the SP. Copyright © 2016 ISUOG. Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

“…We agree with Bault et al 5,6 that measurement of the optic nerves is not feasible because of shadowing from the sphenoid bone. The advantage of our approach, in comparison with that recently described by Vinals et al 7 , is that there is no need for transvaginal examination; a conventional transabdominal approach sufficed. In fact, we attempted to use a transvaginal approach in the preliminary steps of designing the study.…”

“…Visualization of the OC in the fetus is needed to suport a diagnosis of septo‐optic dysplasia in fetuses with agenesis of the septum pellucidum. Our series did not include abnormal cases, this study being methodological rather than clinical.…”

“…The OC and optic nerves can be visualized directly using fetal magnetic resonance imaging, including a section at the base of the skull, to determine normality. The OC has also been assessed using transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound with or without three‐dimensional imaging.…”
