Abstract:Nitrogenases are the only enzymes able to fix gaseous nitrogen into bioavailable ammonia and, hence, are essential for sustaining life. Catalysis by nitrogenases requires both a large amount of ATP and electrons donated by strongly reducing ferredoxins or flavodoxins.
