“…hodoensis. [34] 2. In a typical experiment, a 1 kg sample of 'pine treemoss' was separated into three fractions: one part (A, 36%) was wood devoid of lichen, a second part (B, 29%) comprised mainly lichen (21%) intimately mixed with small pieces of wood, bark, twigs etc.…”

“…[35] Contrary to depsides, which can undergo various degradations (hydrolysis, decarboxylation, alcoholysis) to mono-aryl compounds, which therefore may be readily available as reference compounds, depsidones (viz. 35-42), present in larger quantities in treemoss than in oakmoss, do not generate such compounds, but rather diphenyl ethers (32)(33)(34). Such ethers can be quite diverse, depending on the extraction conditions, thus drastically complicating the analytical task.…”

“…Inhibiton of EBV EA activation was measured as previously described (22,23). Raji cells, the EBV genome carrying lymphoblastoid cells derived from Burkitt's lymphoma, were adjusted to 1x10 6 /ml and cultured in 1 ml RPMI-1640 for 48 h at 37˚C, with the medium containing 4 µmol n-butyric acid and 32 pmol TPA as co-inducers, as well as 16 or 3.2 nmol compounds in DMSO.…”

“…According to a previously published protocol (22), the experimental procedure is similar to the assay above. Cells were diluted to 1x10 6 /ml and cultivated in 1 ml medium containing 4 µmol n-butyric acid and 16 or 3.2 nmol of the compounds obtained.…”

“…In its 13 C-NMR and DEPT spectra, thirtyeight carbon signals (10×C, 9×CH, 11×CH 2 , 8×CH 3 ) were exhibited, including eight methyls, eleven sp 3 methylenes, six sp 3 methines (three oxygenated, δ 80.7, 78.2, and 77.9), six sp 3 quaternary carbons (one oxygenated, δ 76.8), three sp 2 methine, one carboxyl carbon, and three sp 2 . Further comparison of the 1 H and 13 C NMR spectral data with those of 2 showed that com- and H-21 (dd, J = 10.8, 5.3 Hz) in the 1 H-NMR spectrum suggested that the configuration of the two hydroxyl groups at C-3 and C-21 were β and α oriented, respectively [15,16]. The α orientation of the two hydroxyl groups at C-14 and C-15 were supported by the closely related 13 C NMR data of C and D rings of 2 with those of lycernuic acid C [3].…”
