Two-year results of AcrySof toric intraocular lens implantation in patients with combined microincision vitrectomy surgery and phacoemulsification

Abstract: Toric IOL implantation could be an effective method of correcting corneal astigmatism in patients who have vitreoretinal diseases and cataract. The toric IOL showed good rotational stability, even in vitrectomised eyes for 24 months.

“…In the present study, it demonstrated a greater frequency of cataract surgery in female participants, similar to many recently published works (8,10,14,15,16,17,18) . This analysis may be related to two factors: women's greater concern for their health, therefore seeking more medical care and the longevity of eldery women.…”

“…The preoperative corneal astigmatism, there was a tendency of lower values, with a mean of -2.19, similar to studies such as Ahmed et al (10) of -1.70, and Lee et al (18) , of -1.76. However, the study by Hoffmann et al (17) observed higher values of corneal astigmatism before surgery, -3.55.…”

“…13,15 Acrylic material has a stronger tendency to adhere to the capsule than silicone. 10,11 The Rayner toric IOL is made of a hydrophilic acrylic copolymer, with the mean rotation reported to be 3.44 degrees (range 0 to 12 degrees) 4 months postoperatively. 3 Intraocular lens rotation may also occur as a result of capsular bag shrinkage from fibrosis, causing compression against the IOL haptics, although this is more often noted to occur late postoperatively.…”

“…Toric IOL implantation can be an effective method for correcting corneal astigmatism in patients with vitreoretinal diseases and cataract. This is because toric IOLs show good rotational stability, even in vitrectomized eyes [2]. Cataract surgery with the implantation of toric IOL in stable keratoconus is a safe and effective procedure regarding keratometry stability, visual and refractive results [35].…”
