Depression may have a negative impact on health behaviors during crisis situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of depression felt by nursing students on their infectious disease response. A total of 241 nursing students from two nursing colleges in Chungcheong Province was convenience sampled between 2 and 12 December 2020. The tools used in the study were the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Korean version, Fear of COVID-19 Scale, COVID-19-related risk perceptions, and COVID-19 behavior changes. The depression group showed higher fear scores and lower behavioral change scores than the non-depression group. Such findings indicated that the depression group did not actively perform COVID-19-related preventive behaviors. With respect to the influencing factors of depression, depression scores were 2.28 times higher among sophomores than seniors; fear scores were 1.09 times higher in the depression group than the non-depression group; and behavioral change scores were 0.87 times lower in the depression group than the non-depression group. Based on the findings in the present study, it is necessary to screen nursing students with depression during disaster crisis situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and provide active psychological support to such students for their mental health care.

Background For the patients receiving care in the operating room, it emphasizes that the ethical behavior and attitude of health professionals should be aligned with patients’ basic human rights. Surgical ethics may provide an ethical alternative in a specific operating room context. However, it is unclear how actively research is being conducted in this regard. Aim This study determines the direction of future research by identifying ethical issues experienced in the operating room. Method This scoping review is based on the methodological framework suggested by Arksey and O’Malley in 2005. PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, WOS, Cochrane, KISS, and KMbase databases were searched from January 2012 to May 2022. Two researchers independently screened the searched articles by reviewing the titles, abstracts, and full texts. Consequently, 19 studies were selected. Findings Five categories were identified: Professional ethics, Organizational ethics, Patients’ rights, Patient safety, and Allocating resources. The derived categories covered all the same content as the International Council of Nurses’ (ICN) code of ethics, with the exception of one element, that is, global health. Conclusions This study highlights ethical issues in the operating theatre and emphasizes the need for individual and organizational strategies aligned with the ICN code of ethics. Future research should cover a wider range of issues, employ diverse perspectives and methodologies, and enhance ethical practices to improve understanding and ethical practices in the field.

The aim of this study was to develop an Ethical Nursing Competence Self-rating Scale for Clinical Nurses. Methods: A scale-development study was applied that comprised eight stages of DeVellis. The scale verification involved a convenience sample of 423 nurses from September to October 2019 at three general hospitals located in Korea. The content validity, factorial structure validity, item-convergent/discriminant validity, known-group validity, convergent validity, internal consistency reliability, and test-retest reliability of the Ethical Nursing Competence Self-rating Scale for Clinical Nurses were evaluated. Data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Heterotrait-monotrait (HTMT), Cronbach's ⍺, and intraclass correlation coefficient. Results: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses yielded five-factors. Known-group validity was demonstrated by clinical experience and nursing ethics education experience. Convergent validity was demonstrated using measures of defining issue. Internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability were found to be acceptable, as indicated by a Cronbach's ⍺ of .70~.85 and an intraclass correlation coefficient of .72~.89. Conclusion: The Ethical Nursing Competence Self-rating Scale for Clinical Nurses is a new instrument that comprehensively measures the aspects of ethical behavior, ethical decision-making and action, ethical sensitivity, ethical reflection, and ethical knowledge. It consists of 20 items scored on a 4-point Likert scale. The validity and reliability of the scale were verified. These findings indicate that the instrument can be applied in clinical practice, nursing education, and research.
