“…During the last years, "autoimmunization" has been demonstrated to occur in an increasing number of diseases, characterized by symptoms similar to those described above as typical for ulcerative colitis. Circulating antibodies against constituents of human tissue have been detected in disorders of the thyroid (16)(17)(18)(19), lupus erythematosus disseminatus (20)(21)(22)(23), Addison's disease (24), lupoid hepatitis (25,26), acute nephritis (27,28), the nephrotic syndrome (27), and in other diseases. In some of these disorders it has been possible to determine the chemical nature of the antigen capable of reacting with such antibodies.…”

“…Antibodies against liver tissue were demonstrated as early as 1908 by Fiessinger (13) in serum from a number of patients with liver cirrhosis, and the demonstration of autoantibodies in liver cirrhosis has recently been described by Dausset (8). Circulating antibodies against liver tissue have also been demonstrated in hepatitis (12,39,6). The demonstration of circulating antibodies is, however, no direct evidence of autoimmunization as a cause of the liver disease.…”

“…This hypothesis would not explain the onset of nephritis without a latent period. In human glomerulonephritis an antibody to human kidney has been found (Bialcstock, 1951 andVorlaender, 1952;Pfeiffer, SchofHing and Bnich, 1953). Sarre et al (1954) found no such antibody in the serum of rabbits with Masugi nephritis.…”
