Ulnar osteosarcoma in dogs: 30 cases (1992–2008)

Abstract: The prognosis for ulnar osteosarcoma in this population was no worse and may have been better than the prognosis for dogs with osteosarcoma involving other appendicular sites. Partial ulnar ostectomy was associated with a low complication rate and good to excellent function and did not compromise survival time. Telangiectatic or telangiectatic-mixed histologic subtype was a negative prognostic factor for survival time. The efficacy of chemotherapy requires further evaluation.

“…This could create slight carpal instability in vivo, which could lead to a change in cartilage contact areas in the joint and development of osteoarthritis . Subjectively, limb function has been reported to be adequate in the short term following distal ulnectomy including the styloid process . However, objective evaluation and long‐term assessment have not been reported.…”

“…Subjectively, 2 of these dogs showed no lameness at the time of evaluation 2‐3 months after surgery. Information about postoperative limb function was not available for the third case . In the author's experience, limb function is good after partial ulnectomy, despite excision of the ulnar styloid process.…”

“…Although canine appendicular OSA has been extensively characterized in the literature, contemporary reports of tOSA or HSA arising within long bones consist of isolated case reports and small subsets of dogs within larger studies . The criteria used to make diagnoses are not described in the majority of cases, and use of IHC to corroborate diagnoses is rarely reported.…”
