Ultimate time pressure: Conceptualisation and measurement

Abstract: This research defines ultimate time pressure (UTP) as the consciousness of a limited time remaining to live (due to proximity of death) and related feelings. UTP is a new type of time pressure, which differs from chronic time pressure (CTP) and situational time pressure (STP). The objective is to construct a measurement scale, the nomological validity of which will then be used to test the impact of UTP on retirees’ motivations to volunteer. Quantifying this influence is important because it will enable us to … Show more

“…It is important to consider these coping processes together since they interact with one another. The psychological relationship with time left to live can arise from experience of tsunami events, from gradual biological evolution or from meanings associated with a social role (Gourmelen et al , 2016; Sengès et al , 2019). For example, if the death of a partner leads to a disruption in routines, it also leads to a change in social role (role of widow/er), with salient meanings associated with death that can generate a different relationship with the time left to live (Plaud and Guillemot, 2015).…”

“…Thus, in addition to a study of life events, one option emanating from this research would be to develop an understanding of individuals’ relationship with the time remaining to live. Gourmelen et al (2016) propose a measure of ultimate time pressure that includes a cognitive dimension and, interestingly, two affective dimensions – one positive (i.e. the desire to take advantage of the limited time left to live), and the other negative (i.e.…”

“…Carstensen, Isaacowitz, and Charles 1999). They show that when individuals are aware that the time they have left to live is limited, they tend to invest themselves either in behaviours aimed at maximizing pleasure to enjoy this time, or in behaviours aimed at preserving their health to extend it (Gourmelen et al 2016). However, the actual functioning of the nursing homes studied (hyper-medicalization) tends to focus on the need for care and to suppress the search for pleasure.…”
