Abstract:Chemosynthetic organisms flourish around deep-sea hydrothermal vents where energy-rich fluids are emitted from metal sulfide chimneys. In contrast to actively venting chimneys, the nature of microbial life in extinct chimneys without fluid venting remains largely unknown.
