“…Compared with infrared and microwaves, THz wave combines the merits of good penetrating capability and high spatial resolution, which accordingly offers a promising alternative solution for remote sensing [2] applications. In addition, abundant bandwidth resource at THz band is beneficial to facilitating the implement of ultrahigh bitrate wireless communication link [3] for accommodating the drastically increasing demand in various electronics scenarios.…”

“…Clearly in the case of ground to space links, the temperature, atmospheric pressure, and water vapor content all vary with altitude resulting in an altitude dependent atmospheric attenuation as well as refractive index for the THz range [4,5,11]. Some recent examples of outdoor line-of-sight channel modelling can be found in Refs [1,12,13]. In this section, we will focus on the effect of the intervening atmospheric medium under three conditions (a) clear weather in which the attenuation of water vapor and gaseous oxygen dominate (b) airborne particulates such as dust, fog, clouds, and rain (c) localized inhomogeneities in the refractive index of the atmosphere which lead to scintillation effects.…”

“…These disadvantages can be overcome by photonic approaches, resulting in stable, high-performance microwave sources and signal processing. 80 If two lines of the frequency comb are extracted and heterodyned in an appropriate photomixer, the generated mm-or THz-wave can achieve very high quality. In between, experiments have shown a measured phase noise of < − 130 dBc∕Hz at 10 kHz offset and a linewidth of 1 Hz.…”
