“…However, updated recommendations for US screening have been put forth for both the PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome and APC-associated polyposis (91,92,106). In addition, in nonsyndromic FNMTC, US surveillance of family members has been shown to detect earlier stages of disease as reflected by smaller tumor size (0.8 vs. 2.85 cm; p < 0.001), a lower incidence of lymph node metastasis (23.2% vs. 65.6%; p < 0.001) as well as a lower incidence of ETE (20.9% vs. 56.2%; p = 0.002) compared to the proband (107).…”

“…Although these methods are most often neither sensitive nor specific, some of the data they provide are indicative of a higher risk of malignancy (5,(10)(11)(12)(13)(14) (Table 2). Nodules incidentally detected on FDG-PET (focal uptake) in cancer patients a Confirmation of these data as being suspicious of malignancy requires comparison with the results of imaging exams.…”

“…Rosario and colleagues screened the siblings of patients with thyroid cancer and found that screening was associated with an earlier diagnosis because tumors were detected at a smaller size, and with lower rate of lymph node metastases and extrathyroidal invasion. 11 …”
