Ultrathin cadmium sulfide nanosheets for visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production

Abstract: Cd4S5 nanosheets with thickness of 1 nm were successfully synthesized and applied for photocatalytic hydrogen production due to their ultrathin thickness, unexpected stoichiometry and unsaturated surface S− anions.

“…In 2007, one-dimensional (1D) CdS nanowires (NWs) synthesized via a solvothermal method in ethylenediamine were found to exhibit a higher rate of photocatalytic H 2 production in the mixed aqueous solution of Na 2 S and Na 2 SO 3 as sacrificial re- agents [168]. Meanwhile, CdS nanosheets with engineered thicknesses have been fabricated by different methods [169][170][171][172]. Subsequently, various noble-metal or non-noble-metal cocatalysts, such as Pt-PdS [173], MoS 2 [166], NiS [174], Ni(OH) 2 [175] and Ni 3 C [176], have been applied in photocatalytic H 2 evolution over CdSbased photocatalysts.…”

“…Interestingly, structural degradation of thicker nanosheets was found already after 20 h of illumination. [84] MoS 2 is a well-known cocatalyst with good adsorption/desorption properties for H intermediates (ΔG H* close to 0), which promotes H 2 generation. [40] On its own, MoS 2 demonstrates poor HER activity, mainly due to the reduced activity of catalytic sites associated with nanostructure aggregation and poor electronic conductivity of its basal plane.…”

“…[79,80] Cadmium sulfide (CdS) is one of the well-known visible-light active semiconductor photocatalysts, which is easy to prepare in different nanostructures. [81] CdS nanostructures generally require precious metal Pt as a cocatalyst to enhance photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance, but precious metal Pt reserves are scarce and expensive. Therefore, some researchers have been coupling CdS with other semiconductors, which show an efficient visible-light photocatalytic H 2 evolution.…”
