UMAOH Calcium Phosphate Coatings Designed for Drug Delivery: Vancomycin, 5-Fluorouracil, Interferon α-2b Case

Abstract: Drug delivery systems based on calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings have been recently recognized as beneficial drug delivery systems in complex cases of bone diseases for admission of drugs in the localized area, simultaneously inducing osteoinduction because of the bioavailable Ca and P ions. However, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) deposition of CaP does not allow for the formation of a coating with sufficient interconnected porosity for drug delivery purposes. Here, we report on the method to deposit CaP-based coati… Show more

“…In this case, the behavior of M determines the regulation mechanism of HIF-1α interaction with oxygen in cells: with a lack of oxygen (OH–OH bond); the release of HIF-1α from a cell remains almost unchanged with increasing concentration, and with its excess (ON–O bond) the release is enhanced. It is this effect that is observed experimentally [ 18 , 47 ].…”

“…The concentration of a drug released from its carrier varies linearly or exponentially with time, which is normally described by the diffusion equation [ 16 , 17 ]. However, as has been found experimentally, wavelike kinetics of drug release are also possible [ 18 ]. The mechanism of wave-diffusion release is currently unclear.…”

“…In addition, ultrasound might be applied during the MAO process (called UMAO = ultrasound MAO) [579]; there is also a more complicated hybrid UMAOH (=UMAO hybrid) process, which consists of two stages: UMAO with ultrasound treatment for 8 min and subsequent MAO without ultrasound for 2 min. The latter process produces CaPO 4 deposits more suitable for drug delivery applications [580].…”

“…As briefly mentioned in Section 5 above, CaPO 4 can be deposited as various biocomposites with numerous additives. Among them, drugs, amino acids, and other biologically active compounds such as hormones, peptides, genes, growth factors and DNA are present [61,580,843,845,[1088][1089][1090][1091][1092][1093][1094][1095][1096][1097]. Antibiotic-containing CaPO 4 deposits were found to show significant in vivo improvements in infection prevention when compared to just CaPO 4 deposits [1089,[1094][1095][1096][1097].…”

“…Conventionally, the immersion method is used to form thick polymer coatings, including on metal substrates. For example, Prosolov et al [ 13 ] successfully applied a calcium phosphate coating to Ti samples. However, this approach is used much less frequently for ceramic materials, which may be due to their low wettability.…”
