Uncertainty analysis in building energy assessment has become an active research field because a number of factors influencing energy use in buildings are inherently uncertain. This paper provides a systematic review on the latest research progress of uncertainty analysis in building energy assessment from four perspectives: uncertainty data sources, forward and inverse methods, application of uncertainty analysis, and available software. First, this paper describes the data sources of uncertainty in building performance analysis to provide a firm foundation for specifying variations of uncertainty factors affecting building energy. The next two sections focus on the forward and inverse methods. Forward uncertainty analysis propagates input uncertainty through building energy models to obtain variations of energy use, whereas inverse uncertainty analysis infers unknown input factors through building energy models based on energy data and prior information. For forward analysis, three types of approaches (Monte Carlo, non-sampling, and non-probabilistic) are discussed to provide sufficient choices of uncertainty methods depending on the purpose and specific application of a building project. For inverse analysis, recent research has concentrated more on Bayesian computation because Bayesian inverse methods can make full use of prior information on unknown variables. Fourth, several applications of uncertainty analysis in building energy assessment are discussed, including building stock analysis, HVAC system sizing, variations of sensitivity indicators, and optimization under uncertainty. Moreover, the software for uncertainty analysis is described to provide flexible computational environments for implementing uncertainty methods described in this review. This paper concludes with the trends and recommendations for further research to provide more convenient and robust uncertainty analysis of building energy. Uncertainty analysis has been ready to become the mainstream approach in building energy assessment although a number of issues still need to be addressed.

A pneumatic multilayer foil construction with a kinetic shading mechanism has the potential to be an effective response to dynamic climatic factors, such as solar radiation, and therefore moderate the energy consumption of buildings. A parametric study was carried out on a switchable ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) foil cushion with the purpose of investigating the optical performance of an adaptive building envelope and its impact on building energy performance regarding heating, cooling and lighting. Ray-tracing techniques were used to investigate the effects of surface curvature, frit layout and frit properties, on the optical performance of the cushion in open and closed mode. A range of incidence angles for solar radiation were simulated. The results of the simulation showed an angle dependent optical behaviour for both modes. The influence of the dynamic shading mechanism on building energy performance was further evaluated by integrating the optical data obtained for the ETFE foil cushions in a comprehensive energy simulation of a generic atrium building using EnergyPlus. Results suggested that switchable ETFE foil cushions have a higher potential to reduce cooling and heating loads in different climatic regions, compared to conventional glazing solutions (i.e. uncoated double-glazing and reflective double-glazing), while providing good conditions of natural daylighting. Annual energy savings of up to 44.9% were predicted for the switchable ETFE foil cushion in comparison to reflective double glazing. As such, this study provides additional insight into the optical behaviour of multilayer foil constructions and the factors of design and environment that potentially have a major impact on buildings energy performance.

The energy performance of a building has a significant impact on the environment as well as the comfort of its occupants. Given that window systems and control elements such as shading devices play a critical role in a building's energy consumption and comfort, this article presents an investigation into the optimization of windows in four different orientations, along the four cardinal directions, for a typical office room in Tehran. The objective is to reduce cooling, heating, and lighting energy consumption while improving occupant comfort simultaneously, using the NSGA‐II algorithm as a multi‐objective optimization method. To this end, first, an investigation into the effects of various parameters on total building energy consumption and occupant comfort is conducted. Subsequently, each parameter is evaluated in detail concerning its impact on each façade. As the final step, for each façade, the optimal solutions and the most undesirable scenarios are determined. The results, in which the possibility of glare is also considered, can be used by architects and designers for making informed design decisions. The results show that, in all orientations, the number of slats and their distance from the wall are the most effective parameters of shading configurations. Although the eastern and western windows are larger in this study, visual discomfort can be controlled using suitable shadings to achieve acceptable levels of visual comfort. Furthermore, north façades provide the least amount of thermal comfort and consume the least amount of energy while experiencing glare for longer periods.
