Uncertainty-Wise Cyber-Physical System test modeling

Abstract: It is important that a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) with uncertainty in its behavior caused by its unpredictable operating environment, to ensure its reliable operation. One method to ensure that the CPS will handle such uncertainty during its operation is by testing the CPS with model-based testing (MBT) techniques. However, existing MBT techniques do not explicitly capture uncertainty in test ready models, i.e., capturing the uncertain expected behavior of a CPS in the presence of environment uncertainty. MBT… Show more

“…For a final outlook towards the impact of especially future AI developments [82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89] in the supply chain and business domain a metaphor might be adapted: Bostrom started his 2014 book about superintelligence-hence AI-with a fable of sparrows looking out for an owl, symbolizing humans on the verge of developing AI instances (see [14], p. v). However, this unfinished fable lacks three important features: First, sparrows and owls are-though quite different-still both quite similar bird species.…”

“…MBT under uncertainty, in particular, has been considered to improve dependability of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) by defining frameworks supporting MBT of CPSs under uncertainty in a cost-effective manner. UncerTum [49], for example, is a test modelling framework providing a UML profile and model libraries to capture uncertainty explicitly in UML state machine models. The same authors propose the testing framework UncerTest [50].…”

“…The resulting data volume (Big Data) generated by all connected objects represents the new raw material of our time, changing many business models and environments. IoT allows for a production paradigm with digital customer involvement from the development and design phase [7,[23][24][25]. At the same time, market demand requires high volumes of individual products, bearing on I40 with a transformation of industrial production by merging the Internet and information and communication technologies with traditional physical manufacturing processes [20,26,27].…”

“…Furthermore, research suggests that humans feel better when autonomous machines explain their actions [36] and communicate their intents [65]. For example, different modalities can be used to inform pedestrians about an autonomous vehicle's planned actions [38], which is important because pedestrians tend to rely on direct communication with drivers. Autonomous systems should also incorporate methods for signaling problems to humans, especially due to the increasing reliance on a robot's action.…”
