Unclear but present danger: An asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carrier

Abstract: Superspreaders are critical infectious resources in multiple infectious diseases. They can be asymptomatic or present mild symptoms but can transmit pathogens to susceptible populations, leading to severe symptoms, and even death. Early identification of this population is extremely important to inhibit the spread of infectious diseases. Right now, the whole global world is suffering from a devastating infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In this article, a… Show more

“…Yu and Yang ( 30 ) described an asymptomatic carrier who had transmitted SARS-CoV-2 to his brother following close contact. Recently, an asymptomatic carrier resulted in 13 secondary cases of infection, reportedly as an asymptomatic super spreader ( 34 ). In summary, it is almost unquestionable that asymptomatic carriers have infectivity.…”

“…In severe cases, SARS-CoV-2 can cause pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, organ failure, and can even lead to death [ 4 ]. High proportion of infected persons are asymptomatic (40 to 45%) and can transmit the virus for up to 14 days, accounting for an important source of virus propagation since they can go undetected without an appropriate diagnosis [ 5 , 6 ]. One of the main strategies to monitor and control the viral dissemination has been the massive application of detection tests, which allow to identify and isolate infected individuals [ 7 , 8 ].…”

“…However, most of the questionnaires used have focused on certain demographics or particular infection control practices. Also, most of the studies that have surveyed healthcare workers did not utilize laboratory testing to confirm the status of the controls [ 15 ], despite the fact that asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection may play a role in super-spreader transmission events [ 16 , 17 ]. The aim of this study is to better understand and evaluate the association between several infection control factors and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and potentially assess effectiveness of infection control measures.…”
