This article presents crime survey data from the state of West Virginia in the United States showing that, controlling for structural conditions, community atmosphere is significantly related to crime, violence and many other social problems in rural places. These results help identify measurable and achievable progressive desired ends in rural policing, replacing law enforcement outputs (for example, arrests, gun and drug seizures) with safe, strong community outcomes as the summum bonum (i.e, ultimate outcome) of policing. Findings show that interdependent communities where police are partners with residents are the safest, while conflict communities where the police are viewed as adversaries are least safe. These results suggest a left realist consequentialist approach to police ethics to dismantle the hegemony of draconian policies and practices.

Given the frequency of harmful interactions between policing personnel and young people, especially Black young people, there is a need for policing personnel to learn how to promote safe and equitable interactions with young people. We conducted individual interviews with 35 Black YP (15-22 years) and focus group discussions with 50 police representing multiple ranks/roles. Results indicated that both young people and policing personnel view four policing practices as essential: respect, communication skills, empathy/understanding, and engaging young people in non-enforcement contexts. Young people wanted less use of force, more cultural sensitivity and anti-racism, and recognition of youth positive behavior. Some felt nothing could remediate youth-police ruptures. And police noted the importance of having a positive mindset in general and using developmentally appropriate language with young people. Though both groups had reservations overall, both envisioned a future where they could interact more positively. If these two diverse groups can see room for growth and possibility, we should support efforts to achieve safe and equitable relations between young people and policing personnel.

Київ, Україна ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2121-0862Анотація. Висвітлено результати емпіричного дослідження емоційної обізнаності курсантівпершокурсників. Проаналізовано їхні вміння розпізнавати базові емоції людини за мімічними виявами, розуміти й правильно інтерпретувати власні емоції та емоцій інших людей. Метою статті є емпіричне вивчення емоційної обізнаності курсантів. Методологію дослідження становлять сучасні наукові уявлення про фізіологічну основу емоцій та їхню диференціацію. Використано методи емпіричного психологічного дослідження (тестування, анкетування), порівняльного аналізу, структурно-логічний метод. Наукова новизна дослідження полягає в тому, що проведено вивчення особливостей емоційної обізнаності курсантів на початку професійного навчання. Встановлено, що рівень емоційної обізнаності курсантів-першокурсників недостатній, оскільки вони цілком не усвідомлюють і не розуміють емоції, які переживають, не завжди можуть їх інтерпретувати. Вони відчувають складнощі під час розпізнавання та вербалізації базових емоцій за їх мімічними виявами. Курсанти менше впевнені у власній здатності розуміти свої та чужі емоції, на відміну від працівників Національної поліції України та цивільних осіб, старших за віком. Курсанти, як і студенти юридичних вишів, поліцейські та цивільні особи не розпізнали емоцію «зневага» серед інших базових емоцій. Найбільш упізнаваною базовою емоцією є «радість», яку курсанти розпізнавали частіше за студентів юридичних вишів, поліцейських, цивільних осіб. Однак емоція «гнів» є більш упізнаваною, а емоція «здивування» -менш упізнаваною здобувачами вищої освіти, ніж поліцейськими. Здобувачі вищої освіти та поліцейські частіше не впізнавали емоцію «сум», яка є протилежною радості, порівняно із цивільними особами. Обґрунтовано висновок щодо необхідності розвитку емоційної обізнаності курсантів.
