“…This could be possibly due to linkage between the genes affecting the accumulations or pleotropic effects of the genes governing the accumulation of micronutrients and the existence of one or more common genetic-physiological mechanisms involved in mineral absorption or uptake by the root system, translocation and redistribution within the plant tissues, remobilization to the grain, or accumulation in the developing grain (Çakmak, 2008;Peleg et al, 2008;Chatvaz et al, 2010). Positive correlation was observed between kernel Fe and Znc contents by Qin et al (2012), and it might be due to the colocalization of QTLs for both the traits which was also reported in the review of Gupta et al, (2015), there by suggesting the feasibility of simultaneous improvement of the both. Negative correlation of protein content with starch and oil contents showed that which trait should be selected in the breeding program.…”

“…The Caco-2 cell model is among the most abundantly used in vitro systems to estimate bioavailable Fe. Anionic phytate is the main storage form of P that is mostly found in ripened grains and seeds and hinders bioavailability of Fe and Zn by making complexes with their cations in the gastrointestinal tract (Zhou and Erdman, 1995;Gupta et al, 2015). The Caco-2 model converts Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ during uptake and synthesizes ferritin (intracellular Fe storage protein), which is used as a Fe bioavailability indicator.…”

“…It is present in vegetables, fruits, some cereals and legumes, tea, coffee, and wine. Tannins are abundant polyphenols in plants ( Klopfenstein and Hoseney, 1995) that make insoluble complexes with Fe 3+ and reduce its bioavailability in the gut (Gillooly et al, 1984;Gupta et al, 2015). In cereals and legumes, polyphenols enhance the inhibitory effect of phytic acid (Brnić et al, 2014;Tako et al, 2016).…”

“…In India, lpa2-2 allele has been successfully introgressed into elite inbreds at TNAU and markerassisted introgression of lpa1 and lpa2 mutants in early maturing inbreds, viz. 'CM145' and 'V334', has been carried out at Vivekanda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan (VPKAS) 27,28 .…”
