Understanding the Ovarian Interrelationship with Low Antral Follicle Counts (AFC) in the In Vivo Bos indicus Cow Model: Unilateral and Bilateral Main AFC as Possible Biomarkers of Ovarian Response to Hormonal Synchronisation

Abstract: The antral follicle count (AFC) is a test in which the number of oocyte-containing follicles that are developing in both ovaries are visually counted. The count of these follicles strongly relates to the population of the growing follicle reserve on the ovaries. However, the importance of the main number of antral follicle populations (mAFC) in mono-ovulatory animal species has yet to be completely elucidated. Moreover, the investigation of the ovarian interrelationship with unilateral mAFC (main number of ant… Show more

“…However, the impact of ovarian luteal category, blood P4 concentrations, and first GnRH treatment at the of exogenous P4 administration on pre-ovulatory follicle size and pregnancy outcome had not yet been investigated in repeat-breeder crossbred dairy heifers with a random stage of the ovarian cyclicity submitted to the 7-day P4-GnRH-PGF2α-based protocol. Moreover, enhanced knowledge of ovarian biology is essential to increasing the reproductive ability of normal and infertile female ruminants ( Palmieri et al., 2011 ; d'Orey Branco et al., 2016 ; U-krit et al., 2022 ; Yama et al., 2022 ).…”

“…The ovarian response is determined by the number of gonadotropin-responsive follicles present at the initiation of superovulatory treatment [9]. In this context, the antral follicle count (AFC), of an ovary, has been indicated as an important phenotypic characteristic related to female fertility and closely correlated to the performance of in vivo and in vitro embryo production [10,11].…”
