Understanding urban China with open data

Abstract: a b s t r a c tA solid understanding of urbanizing China -the world's largest and most rapidly transforming urban society -calls for improved urban data provision and analysis. This paper therefore looks at major technological, social-cultural, and institutional challenges of understanding urban China with open data, and showcases our attempt at understanding Chinese cities with open urban data. Through our showcases, we hope to demonstrate the usefulness of open urban data in (1) mapping urbanization in China… Show more

“…The third set of research on OGD pertains to case studies in which researchers have picked evidentiary support from countries where OGD initiatives have been undertaken at the national, state or local levels (for instance, Sataslaatten, 2014;Liu et al, 2015). These studies are mainly undertaken in Western settings and there are only a few studies based in developing countries (for instance, Kassen, 2013;Kunkel, 2016;Ohemeng and Ofosu-Adarkwa, 2015;Yang and Wu, 2016).…”

“…Figure 3 is a bar chart that displays the number of respondents from different provinces. Figure 4 illustrates the distribution of respondents on a flat map of China generated in Excel 2016 and provides the population density of China in 2010 [86], in order to detecting whether our sample achieved adequate geographical disperse and representativeness. In general, our online sample roughly fits the geographical distribution of the general population.…”

“…In contrast to the past, when most data was hand-picked, expensive to collect, and time-consuming to process, the new data environment, including "big data" and "open data," helps to present physical data regarding urban form and people's experience of it in a new, accurate and consistent way (Batty, 2013). This new data environment enables us not only to study and grasp the spatial characteristics on a macro scale, but also to study and observe on micro scales, which thus can be applied to both urban design and architecture studies (Liu et al, 2015).…”
