Undifferentiated Intimal Sarcoma of Large Systemic Blood Vessels

Abstract: Intimal sarcoma (IS) is defined as a malignant tumor arising in the tunica intima of large blood vessels. In systemic circulation, the majority of IS develop in the aorta, where close to three fourths of published cases lack specific differentiation and are called undifferentiated intimal sarcomas (UIS). The remaining cases are intima-associated sarcomas of recognized types, also called differentiated intimal sarcomas (DIS). In this report, we further characterize UIS, including its immunohistochemical profile… Show more

“…The luminal-type intimal sarcoma (IS) is the most common sarcoma of the aorta [7]. In the early stages, tumor aneurysms are very similar to atherosclerotic aneurysms on CT findings, which often leads to a delay in diagnosis.…”

“…Plus simplement, ces tumeurs peuvent être class ees en fonction de leur site d'origine (par exemple grosse veine, art ere pulmonaire ou art ere syst emique, incluant l'aorte) 3,7 . La vaste majorit e des sarcomes intimaux de la circulation syst emique, y compris le cas pr esent e ici, se d eveloppe au niveau de l'aorte.…”

“…The location of the tumor in the pulmonary artery is usually associated with the development of pulmonary hypertension, which can be life-threatening. Due to its low incidence, the pathology and treatment strategies of pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma remain to be elucidated [1, 2]. Aggressive surgical approaches for locoregional pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma have led to improved patient survival with a median survival period of 17–26 months [3, 4, 5].…”
