Uniform-velocity spacetime crystals

Abstract: We perform a comprehensive analysis of uniform-velocity bilayer spacetime crystals, combining concepts of conventional photonic crystallography and special relativity. Given that a spacetime crystal consists of a sequence of spacetime discontinuities, we do this by solving the following sequence of problems: 1) the spacetime interface, 2) the double spacetime interface, or spacetime slab, 3) the unbounded crystal, and 4) the truncated crystal. For these problems, we present the following respective new results… Show more

“…The problem studied until this point is closely related to the problem of spacetime modulation (as opposed to motion) where the medium parameters are space-and timeinvariant and the interface is moving in the form of a perturbation induced by an external modulation, without involving any transfer of matter [29][30][31]. Figure 10 compares the two problems, with Figure 10a representing the problem studied here and Figure 10b the related spacetime-modulated problem.…”

“…Hyperuniform structure exists in not only avian retinas but also physical systems such as crystal [24], or even the large-scale structure of the universe [13]. The property of a hyperuniform system can be quantified as the density fluctuation in its corresponding point patterns.…”

“…9(a-b). 114 The idea of travelling-wave modulation has been in use since the early days of travelling-wave amplifiers, whereby electron beams are used to pump energy into co-propagating microwave beams, 115 and have undergone a number of investigations in the 60's, [116][117][118][119][120] and later in the early 2000's. 121,122 Recently, the interest in these systems has revamped, with intense research efforts in the modelling and realization of space-time modulated nonreciprocal systems (see Sec.…”
