Unilateral Nephrectomy in 10 Cattle

Abstract: Ultrasonography was the most useful imaging tool for presurgical diagnosis. Based on our follow-up data, unilateral nephrectomy resulted in few serious short-term or long-term complications, and cattle undergoing this procedure are capable of satisfactory growth, reproduction, and milk production after surgery.

“…During surgery, it is important to prevent penetrating the peritoneum to minimize the chance of contaminating the abdomen and the development of peritonitis (Vogel et al, 2011). In the present case, the peritoneum was damaged during surgery, despite using careful blunt dissection as a precaution.…”

“…Also, the diverticula were symmetrical, which made an acquired origin less likely. In female cows and sows, a suburethral diverticulum has been described to be present in the distal part of the urethra (König & Liebich, 2014;Vogel et al, 2011). A possible anatomical variation of this kind could not be excluded but seemed less likely since the diverticulum was located in the proximal part of the urethra of a gelding.…”

“…A case report in cattle showed that unilateral nephrolithiasis might not be associated with azotemia ( 23 ), which might be possible as long as there is no obstruction of the distal urinary passages. There is evidence showing that alpacas can live without restrictions after unilateral nephrectomy ( 24 ) as other ruminants do ( 25 ). In these two previously mentioned case reports, unilateral nephrectomy was not associated with azotemia.…”
