Abstract:The maximum entropy principle determines the values of thermodynamic variables in thermally isolated equilibrium systems. This paper extends the principle to a variational principle that applies to liquid-gas coexistence in heat conduction. We show the uniqueness of the extension under the assumption that the variational principle and the fundamental thermodynamic relation are simultaneously extended in the linear response regime with the total energy fixed. Using the extended variational principle, we calcula… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
