Unique photoactive nanocomposites based on rhodamine 6G/polymer/montmorillonite hybrid systems

Abstract: An organo-montmorillonite (MMT) complex [polydiallyldimethyl(PDDA)-Kunipia F] with various loadings of polycation was modified with a laser dye Rhodamine 6G (R6G) to obtain a photofunctional hybrid materials for monitoring of dyepolymer-MMT nanocomposite interactions. The polymer-MMTs were prepared in a colloidal state via ion-exchange reaction. The content of polycation (PDDA) in suspensions varied from 20 mg to 1000 mg per 1 g of Kunipia F (KF) MMT. Dramatic changes was observed in the structure of PPDA-MMT … Show more

“…The basal spacings of PDDA-intercalated samples, reported in Table 1, show a shift from d 001 = 1.23 nm, characteristic of the sodium form of montmorillonite, to 1.46–1.56 nm, typical of PDDA-clay complex in which a single layer of polymer chains, adhering to the basal planes of montmorillonite, is formed [25,26,27]. The effect is associated with the 100% cationicity of PDDA, which causes strong attraction with clay layers and favors extended polymer conformation, with few loops and trains [26].…”

“…In the Mt/PDDA_0.25 sample, loaded with the highest PDDA content employed in this work a shoulder at lower 2Θ appears, corresponding to ca. 1.9 nm interlayer distance, suggesting that a part of intercalated polymer forms a double layer [26,27].…”

“…In the present case the PDDA may play a similar role and may serve as a suppressing agent in preventing the undesired aggregation. A study of the effect of PDDA on the aggregation behaviour of R6G has been published elsewhere (Czímerová et al, 2013).…”

“…Saponite is suitable for preparing luminescent hybrid nanomaterials with desirable spectral characteristics. Moreover, the incorporation of saponite between the polymer layers is useful in terms of stabilizing the colloids against aggregation and adsorption (Czímerová et al, 2013).…”

“…The optical properties of these materials often depend on humidity, which could be used for sensing applications. The other approaches included further components, such as polyelectrolytes (Czimerová et al, 2013) or molecular cavitands (Ishida et al, 2014;Matejdes et al, 2015) to avoid dye aggregation and improve photoactivity.…”
