Universal Health Coverage and Environmental Health: An Investigation in Decreasing Communicable and Chronic Disease by Including Environmental Health in UHC

Abstract: Over 83% of major diseases are environmentally mediated. These environmental factors include access to clean air and water, nutritional food, adequate shelter and access to health care. As health care systems across the globe struggle to include not only preventive health, but also health literacy in their approaches, it has become apparent that the most feasible system to combine all of these necessities is the universal health care/coverage (UHC) approach.

“…A total of 83 percent of deaths are mediated by environmental factors. Carcinogenic chemicals can now be found at every level of the food chain, in soils, groundwater and the air, and are widespread in a myriad of household and personal care products to which are exposed every day (Haider and Nibb 2017).…”

“…Dependence on out-of-pocket payments (OOPs) for services, together with the introduction of regressive financing mechanisms, constitutes a barrier to access to needed care and generates problems of financial protection. Every year, more than 100 million people throughout the world end up in poverty as a result of direct spending on health care (Haider and Nibb 2017).…”

“…In fact, it affects all age groups and almost all countries, with a much greater impact in poorer countries, which are experiencing an epidemiological transition with a double burden of disease, i.e., both infectious diseases and chronic non-communicable diseases. Three quarters of deaths from chronic diseases are recorded in low-and middle-income countries (Haider and Nibb 2017).…”
