Universality and critical behavior at the critical endpoint in the itinerant-electron metamagnet UCoAl

Abstract: We performed nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements on itinerant-electron metamagnet UCoAl in order to investigate the critical behavior of the magnetism near a metamagnetic (MM) critical endpoint (CEP). We derived c-axis magnetization Mc and its fluctuation Sc from the measurements of Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 as a function of the c-axis external field (Hc) and temperature (T ). We developed contour plots of Mc and Sc on the Hc -T phase diagram, and observed the strong … Show more

“…One therefore expects that |d(∆C τ )/dH(θ)|, the field derivative of the OP, becomes divergent on the line connecting TCP and QWCP [37]. Unlike the expectation, however, the peak amplitude of |d(∆C τ )/dH(θ)| of URhGe decreases progressively as θ increases, making it somewhat difficult to define the wing edge from these data.…”

“…Studies of the magnetostriction, magnetoresistivity (Aoki et al, 2011a), nuclear magnetic resonance (Karube et al, 2012) and thermopower (PalacioMorales et al, 2013) indicate that the field-induced firstorder transition terminates in a critical point at a temperature T 0 = 11 K at ambient pressure, as illustrated in Fig. 9: ∆L(H)/L shows a step-like jump at H m for T < T 0 which becomes smooth for T ≥ T 0 .…”

“…At ambient pressure, its ground state is paramagnetic (PM), but it undergoes a first-order metamagnetic transition by small magnetic fields only applied along its easy magnetization axis (c axis) of µ 0 H c ∼ 0.6 T at low temperatures. The first-order transition changes to crossover above the CEP at (T, µ 0 H c ) ∼ (12 K, 1.0 T) [6][7][8][9][10][11] . Under hydrostatic pressure (P hydro ), the metamagnetic transition field increases 6 and the CEP reaches the QCEP at (T, µ 0 H c , P hydro ) ∼ (0 K, 7 T, 1.5 GPa) 7,8 .…”
