Abstract: The governmental restriction due to COVID-19 pandemic led to Italian Universities moving teaching from face-to-face, to online. This represented an unexpected transition from traditional learning to what can be considered “e-learning.” This, together with the psychological distress that may be associated with the experience of lockdown, might have affected students' performance. “…In addition to its direct relationship with academic performance, grit is also considered to alleviate the negative impact of an adverse environment on academic performance ( Yang and Kyung, 2019 ; Zhang et al, 2021 ; Sulla et al, 2022 ). Duckworth and Duckworth (2016) pointed out that people with a high level of grit are more optimistic and less discouraged when faced with adversity and therefore more likely to record achievements under adverse conditions (e.g., high academic burnout).…”

In addition, the SEL approach is a way to reduce inequities ( Elias et al, 1997 ; Gehlbach and Hough, 2018 ; Allbright et al, 2019 ).…”

“…In order to achieve better online learning effectiveness, the realization and maintenance of online learning quality must be addressed ( 2 ). Moreover, psychological distress, such as attention and self-directed learning, has a great influence on online learning ( 3 ). Self-directed learning (SDL) involves the whole learning process from diagnosing learning needs, describing learning objectives, to evaluating learning outcomes by the learners themselves ( 4 ).…”
