“…Deep drill hole samples from the Koyna region, about 100 km south of this profile, show that the basement of the DVP closely resembles the Dharwar craton (Ray et al., 2021). Our results show a significant decrease in lithospheric thickness (80–100 km) to the west of the Western Ghat, in contrast with 120–140 km to its east, suggesting significant deformation of the DVP lithosphere compared to the neighboring Dharwar craton, where the lithosphere is mapped at ∼165 km (Chaubey et al., 2023; Mullick et al., 2022). In an earlier study, Saha et al.…”

“…The LAB varies from ∼80 km near the coast, increasing to ∼120–140 km at the Western Ghat and farther east. This is significantly lower than the 165–180 km for the east and west Dharwar craton (Chaubey et al., 2023). In the shallower lithosphere, we observe three ∼10 km thick LVLs (−2% to −4%) at depths of 50–60 km and 90–110 km.…”

“…Deep drill hole samples from the Koyna region, about 100 km south of this profile, show that the basement of the DVP closely resembles the Dharwar craton (Ray et al, 2021;Shukla et al, 2022). An ensemble of velocity models (Figure 3a) of the DVP along the profile, compared with the Dharwar craton (Borah et al, 2014;Chaubey et al, 2022), suggests significant differences between the crustal properties: a lower velocity at a depth of 8-17 km and a higher velocity at 4-8 km below the seismic profile in the DVP. We observe a laterally variable underplated basal layer (Vs >4.0 km/s) in the lower crust.…”
