Unraveling astrocyte behavior in the space brain: Radiation response of primary astrocytes

Abstract: IntroductionExposure to space conditions during crewed long-term exploration missions can cause several health risks for astronauts. Space radiation, isolation and microgravity are major limiting factors. The role of astrocytes in cognitive disturbances by space radiation is unknown. Astrocytes' response toward low linear energy transfer (LET) X-rays and high-LET carbon (12C) and iron (56Fe) ions was compared to reveal possible effects of space-relevant high-LET radiation. Since astronauts are exposed to ioniz… Show more

“…Exploration of the Universe has become reality. Since the 1990s, a large number of publications have appeared reporting changes in gene expression, protein synthesis and secretion in cells, tissues and animals exposed to r-and s-µg [20,32,44,[228][229][230][231][232][233][234][235][236][237]. As a result, we are expanding our knowledge more and more about the stay and its effects on humans, animals, microorganisms, bacteria, and cells in space.…”

“…Gray and white matter alterations, cognitive and motor ability reductions, and the development of neuro-optic syndrome have all been detected after spaceflight ( Riascos et al, 2019 ; Marfia et al, 2022 ; Roberts et al, 2019 ). The study of brain organoids in microgravity is necessary to understand the impact of radiation on astrocytes and neural architectures, like the BBB, to avoid these outcomes ( Roggan et al, 2023 ).…”
