Unusual twinning: Additional findings during prenatal diagnosis of twin zygosity by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array

Abstract: Single nucleotide polymorphism array can provide zygosity diagnosis in addition to chromosomal copy number variation and uniparental disomy detection. ART twin pregnancies have a risk of unusual twinning, such as monochorionic dizygotic, single-embryo transfer twin pairs with discordant karyotypes or dizygotic, and dichorionic monozygotic with vascular anastomoses from day-5 transfer.

“…14 The existence of monochorionicity for dizygotic twins has traditionally been viewed as rare although more recent studies suggest this may be more frequently encountered, especially when there has been assisted reproduction. 15 Monozygotic (“identical”) twins are the consequence of an early splitting of the cells derived from a single fertilized egg and the presentation of the extra‐embryonic tissues will be dependent on the timing of the split. Very early separation (morula stage) will result in dichorionic diamniotic tissues (i.e., the same as that seen in a dizygotic twin pregnancy).…”

“…Dizygotic (“non‐identical”) twins are the product of two egg fertilizations and these pregnancies will generally have dichorionic diamniotic extra‐fetal tissues 14 . “…Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array is a procedure performed during prenatal diagnosis (Zou et al, 2017). Specifically, it can evaluate copy number variations (repeated sections of the genome) and uniparental disomy (receipt of two copies of a certain chromosome from one parent), but its benefits for twin zygosity diagnosis have been underappreciated.…”
