Update of Research Progress on Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) Lenticule Reuse

Abstract: The SMILE lenticule is a complete corneal stroma that is removed from SMILE surgery. Since the increasing number of SMILE surgeries, a large number of SMILE lenticules have been produced, so the reuse and preservation of the stromal lens has become a research hotspot. Due to the rapid development of the preservation and clinical reuse of SMILE lenticules, there have been many related studies in recent years, so we updated it on this basis. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Elsevier Science, CNKI, WAN… Show more

“…Recent advances in clinical applications in KLex-derived lenticules include the uses in hyperopic correction, presbyopia correction, lenticule addition keratoplasty in keratoconus, and ectasia treatment for tectonic reconstruction in corneal perforation and in glaucoma drainage device implantation. [ 22 23 24 ] Current consensus on lenticule addition keratoplasty places it as an alternative procedure in management of keratoconus with the need for more studies to evaluate its long-term effects on corneal stability and induced morphological changes. In conclusion, the evolution of KLex surgeries has revolutionized the portal of corneal refractive and transplantation techniques with more to come in the recent future.…”
