Aim This study explored the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of higher education students towards COVID-19. In addition, this study analysed the association of socio-demographic variables with KAP apart from finding the relationship between KAP. Subject and methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted in India. Study participants were selected using a convenient sampling method from various higher educational institutions across 22 states in India. Data was collected using selfadministered close-ended questionnaires via Google forms. The data were analysed using frequencies and percentage for descriptive purposes. A chi-square test was used to determine the association between groups, and correlation analysis was used to illustrate the significant relationship between KAP. Results The majority, that is, 65.5% of students possess a high level of knowledge about the disease. It was noteworthy that 71.0% of them had a positive attitude towards COVID-19 and 66.7% of them exhibited desirable practices to mitigate COVID-19. Furthermore, the results showed a significant association between KAP and some of the socio-demographic variables studied. Social media emerged as a vital source of information regarding COVID-19 for the majority (81.0%) of students. Also, a strong significant positive correlation was observed between KAP variables. Conclusion One-fourth of the students demonstrated only low and moderate levels of knowledge, negative attitude and undesirable practices in preventing COVID-19. The implications suggesting various approaches to enhance KAP to moderate the spread of COVID-19 among the students were recommended to aid the higher educational institutions.

Background: Diabetes is an important comorbidity which is contributing to the mortality among COVID-19 patients. There are limited studies in Goa which have measured the impact of COVID-19 on the diabetes. Therefore, this study is undertaken to measure the impact of lockdown on glycaemic control in patients with T2DM. The study objectives were to assess the changes in HbA1c and to identify some factors affecting the glycaemic control during the pandemic on the urban population of Goa during the period of pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative study was undertaken during August to September 2020 amongst Diabetic patients undergoing treatment at Santa Cruz (Goa). Data was collected via oral questionnaire and from patients records at 6 months before and after lockdown after IEC approval. The data was entered into excel v2010, and analysed using SPSS v22 and expressed as simple proportion and percentages.Results: Out of total 50 patients enrolled in the study, the mean post-lockdown HbA1c (8.2±2.1) was found to be higher as compared to pre-lockdown values (7.3±1.3) and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). The Chi Square test was calculated comparing HbA1c after lockdown with Diet, exercise and drug compliance which was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05).Conclusions: Mean HbA1c of 50 T2DM patients was higher post lockdown. There is a need to re enforce necessary lifestyle modification and prescribed drug compliance for adequate diabetes control during COVID-19 pandemic to reduce overall morbidity.

Practices, awareness, and perception towards home-based COVID-19 management among the general population in Mangalore city in south India

Background: Most patients with COVID-19 experience mild illness, which can be managed in a home environment. This study was done to assess the perception, awareness, and practices regarding home-based management of COVID-19 among the general population in India. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done in May and June 2021. Data were collected using a Google Form. Results: Mean age of the 294 participants was 36.6 ± 12.1 years. Of these participants, 45 (15.3%) were diagnosed with COVID-19 anytime in the past. Among them, 37 (82.2%) underwent home-based management for COVID-19. Monitoring body temperature and oxygen saturation were performed just once a day by 15.2% and 5.9% of COVID-19 patients respectively. Self-medication was practiced by 11 (29.7%) patients. Disposable face masks were worn by 23 (62.2%) patients beyond eight hours of continuous usage. The disposable type of face mask was not discarded despite becoming wet, and cloth masks were worn by eight (21.6%) patients. Disposable gloves were only worn by 14 (37.8%) caregivers of COVID-19 patients. As many as 10 (27%) patients were tested for COVID-19 after completion of home isolation. Awareness of all mild symptoms and signs of the disease was known to only 19 (6.5%) participants. Normal oxygen saturation in the blood was known to 40 (13.6%) participants. Just six (2%) participants were aware of the correct duration of home isolation in a symptomatic patient with COVID-19. The recommended duration of handwashing with soap and water was known to 102 (34.7%) participants. As many as 17.4% and 32.7% of participants were not confident in using thermometer and pulse oximeter respectively. Conclusion: Practices, awareness, and perception regarding certain essential measures in COVID-19 home management were found lacking among several participants. These need to be addressed by suitable training programs among the general population.
