“…Over six million people are affected by the disease in Latin America, being endemic in 21 countries [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Additionally, it has been proposed that in the United States approximately 300,000 persons live with the infection, including 57,000 Chagas cardiomyopathy patients and 43,000 infected reproductive-age women [ 7 ], even though only a small fraction are properly diagnosed and treated [ 8 ]. Comparably, in the last decade, globalization has allowed the disease to spread through European countries, such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Canada [ 9 , 10 ].…”

“…Comparably, in the last decade, globalization has allowed the disease to spread through European countries, such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Canada [ 9 , 10 ]. In this scenario, at least 100 million people have a high risk of infection by living in endemic areas of disease [ 11 ], while the estimated annual global burden is $627.46 million in healthcare costs and 800,000 disability-adjusted life-years [ 7 , 12 ], besides that, approximately 10,000 deaths per year can be attributed to the disease [ 13 ], making CD a serious public health problem worldwide.…”

“…Prior to initiating these further studies and to give confidence that the data obtained from the booster virtual screening was correct, we selected four compounds (4,13,18,20) from the screening for resynthesis and retest in orthogonal assays. This effort served two purposesfirst, to ensure that analytically pure Scheme 2.…”

“…Chagas disease (CD), or American trypanosomiasis, is a neglected tropical disease with a prevalence of 6.5 million cases, a burden of 10,000 deaths per year, 275, 000 DALYs and economic costs reaching US$7 billion per year (1,2). The large majority of cases occur in endemic regions of Latin America, but there is a clear long-term trend of globalisation (3)(4)(5). CD is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan parasite, which is primarily transmitted to humans by blood-feeding insect vectors (triatomine bugs), but it can also be acquired congenitally or from contaminated blood transfusions, organ transplants and foodstuffs (6).…”
