Updates on the distribution and diversity of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Romania

Abstract: Background: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are haematophagous insects that transmit the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the main causative agent of both zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and canine leishmaniasis (CanL) in the Mediterranean basin. Eight species of sand flies have been previously recorded in Romania: Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus alexandri, Phlebotomus sergenti, Phlebotomus perfiliewi, Phlebotomus neglectus, Phlebotomus longiductu… Show more

“…Our data suggest that only one generation is developing, as the number of trapped sand flies decreased at the end of August (Additional file 1: Table S1). The number of females captured in our study was higher on average than the number of males; this could be seen also in other studies [2,8]. Under laboratory conditions the proportion of males to females is 50:50 [7].…”

“…The vector group occurs throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, as well as in temperate zones. In Europe, sand flies are widespread in the Mediterranean area with about 25 species known to be present [2]. However, with increasing temperatures due to climate change, species such as Phlebotomus ariasi Tonnoir, 1921 and Phlebotomus perniciosus Newstead, 1911 are predicted to extend their range [3,4].…”

“…No recent data on sand flies are available for urban Bucharest and its surrounding area. During recent years, the distribution of some Phlebotomus sand fly species harboring TOSV was updated for Romania, including P. perfiliewi , P. neglectus , P. sergenti , but not P. perniciosus ( 15 ). Given that only a handful of severe cases were diagnosed at a tertiary-care hospital, the real magnitude of TOSV human infections and those of affected areas are unknown and warrant further study.…”
